Tirana, Albania

Explore Albania's capital with me...

Inside Bunkerart 2

Tirana, the capital of Albania, is known for its colourful Ottoman-, Fascist- and Soviet-era architecture. Pastel buildings surround the city's focal point, Skanderbeg Square. Tirana is becoming more and more a tourist destination in recent years; join me as I show you around the city with all the things to see and do...

Pyramid of Tirana

Unless you fancy a hike up to the mountains, one of the best views of the city of Tirana is up the Pyramid of Tirana. It's essentially a pyramid with steps all the way round taking you to the top where you can enjoy views of the city. You'll have to climb a little over a hundred steps to get to the top but once you're there the views are definitely worth it!

Bunker Art

In Tirana there are 2 Bunker Art Museums which showcase the country's history. BUNKART 1 is dedicated to the history of the Albanian communist army and the daily life of Albanians during the regime years; BUNK'ART 2 reconstructs the history of the Ministry of Interior in Albania and reveals the secrets of the Sigurimi, the political police that was the harsh weapon of persecution used by the regime. BUNK'ART 2 is more of a historical-cultural project that preserves collective memory and telling the story of the communist regime' years, including the horrors of that regime. Both inside actual anti-nuclear bunkers, entry is about €10, you will come out learning so much about Albania's dark past...

Namazgah Mosque

Finally one other site in Tirana is to visit the Namazgah Mosque. You can see this place from miles away! One of the best viewpoints is when you head up the Pyramid of Tirana. Anyway, the Namazgah Mosque or the Great Mosque of Tirana, is actually the largest mosque in the Balkans. It has a capacity told hold up to 10,000 people. The mosque itself is of course free to enter...

To be honest there wasn't much else to do in Tirana; I only spent 24 hours here and managed to see everything. Head over to Skanderbeg Square to be right in the heart of the city. Nevertheless, Tirana makes for a great short express trip...
