Sofia is the capital of the Balkan nation of Bulgaria. It is located in the west of the country, below Vitosha Mountain. Once formerly known as Serdika, Sofia has been occupied by Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Soviet empires.
We started off our stay in Sofia with a free walking tour to get a glimpse of the sights and to learn its history and culture. The tour is free (although it is recommended to tip afterwards), it is run a couple of times a day and can be done in a number of languages. Bulgaria really surprised me and was much more beautiful than I expected. The city of Sofia is a great place to visit and the food is pretty good too.
