MILANO

Updated: Nov 30, 2021

One of the fashion capitals of the world, home to high-end restaurants and shops, works of Leonardo Da Vinci, and with the famous Duomo Di Milano Cathedral as its centrepiece...

I was in Milan for just a couple of days but I managed to cram so many things into this short period of time! A lot of people come here for the iconic Cathedral so you'll have to scroll down to read all about it ;)

Churches:

As a Catholic society, you cannot visit Italy without noticing how religious they are and taking the opportunity to visit one of their many churches, and I tell you, in Milan there are many to see! Some important ones to mention are:

Basilica di Sant'Eufemia - one of the most colourful interiors I have ever seen San Lorenzo Maggiore - one of the oldest churches in Milan

Sant'Ambrogio - one of the oldest churches of Christianity

Santa Maria delle Grazie - home to Leonardo Da Vinci's 'The Last Supper'

Santuario di San Bernardino alle Ossa - with an interior made completely of bones

(Left) interior of Basilica Di Sant'Eufemia, (Centre Left) San Lorenzo Maggiore, (Centre) Sant'Ambrogio, (Centre Right) Santa Maria Delle Grazie, (Right) interior of Santuario Di San Bernardino Alle Ossa

As I mentioned before, the Santa Maria Delle Grazie is where you can find the famous painting of 'The Last Supper' by Leonardo Da Vinci. Entry to the church itself is free: it has more restrictive opening times than most places, 09:30-12:20 & 15:30-17:50. However if you wish to see The Last Supper, which is what everyone wants to see, you have to reserve a tour in advance.

Opening hours are: Monday: Closed Tuesday - Saturday: 08:15-19:00

Sunday: 14:00-19:00

Tickets cost €15, click on the link below for information: Vivaticket: biglietti online, prevendita concerti, biglietti spettacoli

Naviglio Canals:

Towards the South of the city and not too far from the centre, are a number of canals with the biggest being Naviglio Grande. If you're looking for a nice evening stroll this place is great; walk along the canals and stop off for dinner in one of the many restaurants that line the river.

Duomo Di Milano Cathedral:

The Duomo Di Milano Cathedral lies in the heart of Milan and is an iconic centrepiece and landmark in Milan. Taking over 600 years to build, this impressive architectural marvel stands tall as one of the largest cathedrals in the world. Make sure you visit this place both by day and by night! Not only can you appreciate it from the outside but also from the inside, underneath visiting the archaeological exhibitions, on top as you climb up to the rooftop admiring the views all around, and also the museum giving you all the history of the cathedral.

Book for the DUOMO PASS STAIRS and this ticket will grant you access to the Cathedral itself, the Archaeological area, the Rooftop, the Duomo Museum, Church of San Gottardo, and other Exhibitions. Tickets cost €15 and the Cathedral is open every day 09:00-19:00 but the Museum is closed on Mondays.

Visit the official website to buy your tickets in advance to save you queuing on the day! Duomo di Milano – Online Tickets (duomomilano.it)

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II:

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II may just be a place for looking and admiring the views, or if you dare, enter one of the many expensive shops that are inside the Galleria. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is an elegant 19th Century shopping arcade, housing some of the most luxurious boutiques in Milan.

You may find many shops including the likes of:

  • Gucci

  • Prada

  • Louis Vuitton

  • Swarovski

  • Dior

Castello Sforzesco:

The Castel Sforzesco is a medieval fortification located in Milan and it was one of the largest citadels in Europe at the time. Entry to the castle itself is actually free but if you wish to go inside to the museums of the castle you will have to pay for a ticket. However, if you arrive after 14:00 on the first and third Tuesday of the month it's free! And to be honest I wouldn't really recommend going inside, if it's free why not but to pay €13 it's not worth it. If you don't visit the museum, you are not missing out on anything...

The Castle Sforzesco is located at Parco Sempione which if you have the time is a lovely place to walk through and just relax. Head to the end of the park to visit the Arco Della Pace.
