Kotor, Montenegro

A place so underrated you need to visit before it becomes popular...

View from Kotor Fortress

"Kotor in Montenegro blew me away. I didn't really know what to expect of this place but what I found was amazing. Driving down the mountain, around the beautiful Bay of Kotor, I wanted to stop at every corner and admire the view, it was incredible".

Kotor is a fortified town on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in a bay near the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovćen. With winding streets and squares, its medieval old town has several churches, including the Kotor Cathedral. Stroll along the waterfront and take a look at the huge cruise ships that come to dock here, relax on the beach and soak up some sun, explore the historic old town, or my most favourite activity, hike up to the Kotor Fortress.

Kotor Fortress:

A hike up to the Fortress takes about 45 minutes if you take your time and really enjoy the view. Entry to the Fortress is €15 but there are other ways of getting up to the top for free by hiking up along the back to sneak in. Whether you pay or not, it's definitely worth it! This I would have to say was my highlight in Kotor, Montenegro. The Fortress itself is really impressive, and the views are spectacular! Once you're at the top you can either go back down or continue hiking up to the top of the mountain to see the Fortress and the Bay of Kotor from a higher perspective. Going up and down I probably hiked for about 5 hours in total, the time flew by and it was just a great experience meeting other hikers along the way.

The Old Town:

The old town is the most famous part of Kotor, where the history, culture, and traditions are preserved. The old town of Kotor has a great number of monuments of the medieval architecture: churches, cathedrals, palaces, and museums. Its beauty is complemented with the multitude of narrow streets, squares, and markets.

The old town of Kotor stands out also by the great number of stylishly made gates, palaces and a great number of stairs. The old town of Kotor today is considered to be the best preserved medieval urban entity in the Mediterranean. The largest and the most impressive are, by all means, the city walls which surround the town.

Walking along the waterfront, these are some of the views you can find

As I mentioned before, I highly recommend visiting this underrated place. Do so now before it becomes well known!
