Chasing Waterfalls

From Gullfoss to Skogafoss, to every waterfall inbetween, follow me on my journey to hunt down some of Iceland's most beautiful and impressive waterfalls...

(Left) Seljalandsfoss, (Centre) Gljúfrabúi, (Right) Skogafoss

I'm sure you enjoyed exploring Iceland's South Coast as much as I did! Now let's check out some impressive waterfalls! First up it's Seljalandsfoss!

Seljalandsfoss:

With a cascade of water dropping 200 feet (60 meters) down a rock face, Seljalandsfoss is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. It also has the unique feature of a small cave behind the curtain of water which visitors can access via a slippery but safe path. Therefore it is the only known waterfall of its kind where it is possible to walk behind it. Make sure you wear some very waterproof clothing because you will get very wet here!

Gljúfrabúi:

Gljúfrabúi

A little off the beaten track and often unnoticed by visitors, located to the left of Seljalandsfoss is one of the best-kept treasures on the southern coast of Iceland: Gljúfrabúi, a waterfall inside a cave. Taking care not to slip on the wet stones, it's possible to walk along the right bank of the stream to admire at the waterfall. Since it's a rleatively small space, often you will have to queue up until it's your turn to go inside. Like Seljalandsfoss you will also get very wet here, maybe even more so! Try and climb onto the rock for a cool photo with the best results! Most of the time spent here may be waiting in line, but everyone is patient and you will all get your own time with the waterfall before the next guests enter.

Skogafoss:

The waterfall we have all been waiting for: Skogafoss! Like Gullfoss, Skogafoss is also one of the most popular and famous destinations for many visitors. Skogafoss is unique because the waterfall comes directly from two glaciers. The heavy veil of water is impressive and walking close enough envelops visitors in a cloud of spray, sound and refracted light. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days. Enjoy in the mist down below or even take the trek to the top; it takes about half an hour but you can also hike to the base of the waterfall. There’s so much to see and do around Skogafoss; it's a great place for a picnic - so enjoy it!

The Almighty Skogafoss!

Remember to check out all of the other cool things to do on the South Coast! Or if you haven't already, head out to the Golden Circle!
