Blue Lagoon Vs. Sky Lagoon?

Unsure on which lagoon to choose? Let me help you decide...

Many people who come to Iceland visit at least one of these famous lagoons, or maybe even both. But if you only have time or the money to visit only one then let me help you decide!

BLUE LAGOON: The Blue Lagoon is located just a 25 minute drive away from Keflavik International Airport and 45 minutes drive from the capital city of Reykjavik. Named one of 25 wonders of the world, the Blue Lagoon has been honoured for its unique geothermal seawater. This renowned resource is rich in silica, algae, and minerals – the elements that give the lagoon its skin-nourishing powers. The lagoon also features a sauna, steam room, steam cave, mask bar, massage waterfall, and an in-water beverage bar; the lagoon is rich with possibilities for a uniquely unforgettable adventure. Enjoy the experience and soak in the natural warm waters (approximately 37-42°C).

There are 3 types of tickets to choose from: Comfort, Premium and Signature. I went with the Comfort ticket and this is what was included:

Price ISK 9,990-14,490 (€65-€95) depending on the time of year & time of day

• Entrance to the Blue Lagoon

• Silica Mud Mask at the Mask Bar

• Use of towel

• 1 drink of your choice

At the in-water bar, you can choose from an enticing selection of smoothies, juices, soft drinks, beer, and wine. And at the mask bar, you'll be given the Silica Mud Mask: purifying, deep cleansing, and strengthening, the Silica Mud Mask fortifies the skin barrier as it purges the skin of dirt and pollutants, diminishing the visibility of pores while leaving your complexion luminous, fresh, and protected.

SKY LAGOON:

Located just south or the city centre of Reykjavik, experience true Icelandic bathing culture at Sky Lagoon with their oceanside geothermal lagoon. Embark on a journey of the senses, powered by the elements. Sky Lagoon offers the chance to escape just moments from Reykjavík city centre. Soak in the warm waters of approximately 38-40°C, enjoy the fresh Atlantic Ocean air, the sounds of wildlife, the sensation of warm geothermal water and the captivating views from the lagoon’s 70m infinity edge.

Similarly to Blue Lagoon there are 2 types of tickets to choose from: Ser & Saman. I went with the Saman ticket, the classic and most popular package which includes Sky Lagoon’s signature Skjól ritual. Price ISK 12,990-14,990 (€85-€98) depending on the time of year & time of day.

Sky Lagoon is mostly famous not just for its infinity pool but for their 7 step ritual:

  1. The Lagoon: Begin your journey by feeling the embrace of the geothermal lagoon and soak in the stunning views.

  2. The Cold Plunge: Inspired by Iceland’s ancient Snorralaug pool, the cold plunge engages and awakens your every sense.

  3. Sauna: Discover absolute tranquillity as steam and warmth opens your pores, removes toxins and cleanses your skin. Enjoy the ocean views through breathtaking seaside windows.

  4. Cold Mist: Feel the touch of Icelandic winds and the crisp, cool drizzle through mist.

  5. Sky Body Scrub: Exfoliate your skin and lose yourself in the softness of their signature Sky Body Scrub. Wear the scrub into the steam for the best results.

  6. Steam: Let the steam wrap around you, allowing your skin to absorb the key therapeutic elements of the Skjól ritual and maximize the hydrating benefits of the Sky Body Scrub.

  7. Shower: Taste the essence of krækiber - the crowberries that dot the lava fields. Drank by Icelanders for centuries, this wholesome Saft juice elixir stimulates the palate with a profile that embodies the spirit of our land.

To be quite honest, I must say I did prefer the Blue Lagoon over the Sky Lagoon. Whilst the Sky Lagoon truly makes you feel like your body is regenerated with their 7 step Ritual, the incredible infinity pools looking out at the sea, it still felt a bit man made. Blue Lagoon on the other hand felt so natural, with the volcanic rocks (plus with the active volcano very close by) made the experience all the more thrilling.

So there you have it, if you only have the time or the money to visit one lagoon, I recommend you chose the Blue Lagoon! Now that we are relaxed, let's go explore Iceland!
